Great Display

July 2006

The 14th of July is Bastille day in France and a public holiday. This dates back to the storming of the Bastille in Paris in 1789 and the start of the French revolution. The Bastille was a prison where the Kings and Queens often used to lock up people that did not agree with their decisions. Just as people in the United States celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence as the beginning of the American revolution, so the people of France celebrate the storming of the Bastille as the beginning of the French revolution. Both revolutions brought great changes, and Kings and queens no longer rule.

In the evening the whole of Saumur(our local town)is thronging with people with most of the roads being closed.

There is entertainment, market stalls and a display of boats going up and down the river. The evening draws to a close with a spectacular firework display on the banks of the river Loire close to the bridge. The photos below don’t do them justice but it is very difficult to capture them on camera.

  1. Hi guys,

Don’t forget our new email. Hopefully we will soon be moving to Devon (subject to the dreaded contract!) Hope to see you next year if I can escape from work soon enough! In future we will have to travel via Plymouth! I assume to St Malo which will be a help. Hope you and the family (dogs) are keeping well.

    Regards from Bob & Hazel
