Surrounded
July 2006
We have been surrounded by combine harvesters this week as the farmers busy themselves gathering in the wheat. This once again changes our view from the garden which will change yet again now that the maize is growing rapidly. The sun flowers are also now out in all their glory turning their heads to follow the sun.
We to have been busy harvesting in the garden with a bumper crop of cherries as you can see from the photo, Lily spends most of her time down under the tree eating the windfalls. We have also had an abundance of rasberries and black currrants this year. We think it may be because we had a wetter and cooler spring. Our fruit trees seem to be doing well also, the peach tree is loaded as are the plum and apples and with the high temperatures we are experiencing at present they should soon ripen.
The veggie plot is also doing well with tomatoes, courgettes, and peppers already being picked and eaten.
The only failure we have had really are the runner beans, the seeds came from England and we thought we would see if they would grow here, they grew vigourously with lots of flowers but unfortunately they did not turn into beans, apparently this is due to the temperature being much higher here than in England and the flowers die rather than set and turn into beans.
